Harsh World, This World.


January 2010 Acrylic on CanvasThis painting was the first painting where I discovered my own personal style. The benday dots are inspired by Roy Lichtenstein. I pulled the idea from an image courtesy of http://www.wellsphere.com This painting is all about reality-you always hear about the starving children in Africa when you don't finish a meal, what most people don't fully recognize is that its true. And this does not only apply to Africa. It's the reality of the world. I came across the image of a child peeking out from behind his mothers back while doing my culture study of Africa and poverty, and decided to paint it with my own twist. The symbol in the bottom right hand corner is the African symbol for hope and appreciation which is something every person, wealthy or poor, could use in their lives.

This piece is truly amazing! I love the benday dots and the texture, and the baby's stare is so poignant.

Artist's Statement

My history of art classes is limited to a brief Art Foundations class my freshman year, and the two years I will have been an IB Art student. Although my classroom hours are very few, I have always had an interest and love for all styles of art. So, although my appreciation (unfortunately) does not match my level of experience, I am working to improve.
After my first year in my higher level IB Art class, I had experimented in countless styles, and forms of visual arts. These include: acrylic painting, lino-cut prints, charcoal, pencil drawings, paper mache, pastels, ceramics, reduction prints, photo montages, paper stenciling.. etc. After being exposed to these art forms I found where my strengths and weaknesses lie, and eventually decided to narrow my study to painting.
Luckily, IB Art is not only a studio class, but an art studies class as well. Throughout the two years, I have studied artists such as Chuck Close, Andy Goldsworthy, Mark Chagall, Roy Lichtenstein, Andrew Wyeth, Gustav Klimt, DaVinci, Dennis McNett, Frida Kahlo, and countless others. Each has helped to build my own voice as a painter, which seems to be getting stronger with each painting.
My paintings tend to be bold, with clear lines, and limited intricate detail. I spend the majority of the time working with the colors, blending and layering them to get the effect I am aiming for. In the future, I hope to keep my current style, however work to make the images more detailed and full with a more disciplined layout.
