Oops, I spilled.

"Spill" May 2010
Acrylic on Canvas

This piece is commenting on last years BP Oil Spill. I like the way this piece turned out, however, I feel as if I could have done more with the background. In my opinion, the background is too flat, however, it also keeps the viewers focus on the figure in the middle which was my goal.

Melanie: Renaissance Style Painting

This is one of my more recent paintings, and is a new style that I experimented with after studying Renaissance Art. I began by painting my image using watered down burnt umber. The rest of the painting was done with many thin layers of different acrylic paints. When using this technique, the light seems to move through the photo, bringing out a 3-dimnsionality that I had never achieved before.

Lilian

"Lilian Day" 2010
Acrylic on Canvas

This is a painting I did this year of one of my closest friends, Lilian. I, once again, used my theme of dots to bring out different parts of the image. Initially, I began the painting as one portrait, and didnt add the second (flipped) image until later. With this particular painting, I experimented with movement, and how lines can manipulate the way the viewer's eyes follow a painting.

My Pantry: Oil Pastel on Cardboard

"My Pantry" October 2010
Oil Pastel on Cardboard

This was my first time working with oil pastels, and I really enjoyed learning how to manipulate the colors, and working with different blending techniques. I used several different types of oil pastels and found that I enjoy using the waxier pastels versus the smoother ones. The image itself is a portion of the foods in my pantry. When focusing on each detail of this image, I was able to learn a lot about my culture. This has definitely been one of my favorite projects so far!

Ed Hardy April 2010
Acrylic on Canvas
This painting was my own attempt to create an advertisement atmosphere to the painting. I had a lot of fun painting the shoes (with the help/advise of friends, however, I think the border is too bold and kind of sloppy. All in all, it was a fun experiment!

This is a photo montage I created that represents who I am, as well as my culture. Dance, heritage, dreams and realities are all key elements that make up this montage.

My Object: Adding Blue

This painting is one of my first three paintings, and is actually a part of a series of pointe shoe paintings/drawings I have done. I chose to paint pointe shoes because it is very relative to who I am as a person, and my passion for ballet. In this particular painting, I discovered the power of the color wheel, and how using contrasting colors can bring depth to a painting. By adding extra blues and greens to the photo, I was able to make the image pop. It gave the painting voice (I thought it was too boring before). I had to build the courage to add the colors, and was hesitant at first, but I was happy with the results.

ACRYLIC ON CANVAS PAINTING: Fall 2009

First Painting

"City Sounds" September 2009
Acrylic on Canvas

"City Sounds" was my first painting I had ever done. Basically my time was spent experimenting with the colors, and manipulating the paint to get the paint blends I wanted. This painting is meant to be abstract, and was inspired by the painter, Lana Lisitsa.
