Oops, I spilled.

"Spill" May 2010
Acrylic on Canvas

This piece is commenting on last years BP Oil Spill. I like the way this piece turned out, however, I feel as if I could have done more with the background. In my opinion, the background is too flat, however, it also keeps the viewers focus on the figure in the middle which was my goal.

Melanie: Renaissance Style Painting

This is one of my more recent paintings, and is a new style that I experimented with after studying Renaissance Art. I began by painting my image using watered down burnt umber. The rest of the painting was done with many thin layers of different acrylic paints. When using this technique, the light seems to move through the photo, bringing out a 3-dimnsionality that I had never achieved before.

Lilian

"Lilian Day" 2010
Acrylic on Canvas

This is a painting I did this year of one of my closest friends, Lilian. I, once again, used my theme of dots to bring out different parts of the image. Initially, I began the painting as one portrait, and didnt add the second (flipped) image until later. With this particular painting, I experimented with movement, and how lines can manipulate the way the viewer's eyes follow a painting.

My Pantry: Oil Pastel on Cardboard

"My Pantry" October 2010
Oil Pastel on Cardboard

This was my first time working with oil pastels, and I really enjoyed learning how to manipulate the colors, and working with different blending techniques. I used several different types of oil pastels and found that I enjoy using the waxier pastels versus the smoother ones. The image itself is a portion of the foods in my pantry. When focusing on each detail of this image, I was able to learn a lot about my culture. This has definitely been one of my favorite projects so far!
